Penn Researcher Marybeth Gasman Receives Grant to Study Success at Minority-serving Institutions
Penn Graduate School of Education Professor Marybeth Gasman and her collaborator Clifton Conrad were awarded a $275,000 grant by USA Funds to research student success at AAPI-serving institutions. In this first-of-its-kind study, the researchers will study retention, learning and degree attainment at three AAPI institutions during the next two years. They will examine the environments at these colleges and universities, student success initiatives and institutional data, as well as peer relationships and faculty-student relationships.

Chyke Doubeni's groundbreaking research and clinical work aims to erase the inequities that frequently arise in health care and health outcomes among different racial and socioeconomic groups. His work posits that gaps in colorectal cancer prevention, detection, and treatment are not due to differences in genetics, but rather they are purely a result of social, environmental and behavioral factors.

The Graduate School of Education has launched the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education which is led by Associate Professor of Education Shaun Harper. The Center brings together researchers whose work will inform education policy and practice.
Chyke Doubeni Appointed Presidential Term Professor
Chyke Doubeni is Penn's second Presidential Term Associate Professor. Dr. Doubeni, an expert on colorectal cancer and racial disparities in health care, is Presidential Term Associate Professor-Clinician Educator in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health of the Perelman School of Medicine.
Benjamin Garcia Appointed Presidential Term Professor
Benjamin Garcia has been named the first Presidential Term Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, effective June 1. Garcia will be Presidential Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the Perelman School of Medicine.
