MLK, Jr. once said, “Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere.” With this guiding principle in mind, we are excited to host a discussion-based program examining connections between the black civil rights and LGBTQ+movements. Using prominent historical figures like Bayard Rustin, Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin, and Pauli Murray, we will reflect on the intersections of these two social justice movements and attempt to disrupt the dominating narrative that oppression among these communities should be compared. Instead we hope to expand on how these communities can continue to work together to promote freedom, justice, and equality for all. Food will Free and open to the public.

This year, for our annual series, we are highlighting efforts to increase teacher diversity, and how community members can partner with these initiatives. The agenda will also include representatives from local colleges and universities who are members of a newly created Educator Diversity Consortium, as well as table top discussions on various aspects of “how to” get involved. This event is sponsored by the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, Penn’s African-American Resource Center, and PHENND (Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development).
